Weekly Blog

Welcome to the blog.
Posted 6/7/2013 7:36am by Eric.

Glad for the rain during the night and what's coming today - the veggies will love the drink . . . hopefully so much so that they will grow alot! School was out this week for our district, so Wednesday was a play day at DelGrossos for Dema.  He had a great, great year in 5th grade so he more than earned it!  He has been saying nearly every day for weeks things like, "DelGrosso's is a good park, Dad", or "DelGrosso's is fun and it's close".  We got the hint.  It was such a beautiful day on Wednesday . . . it was good, but definitely weird, to stop mid week and do something out of the normal - I'm all confused about what day it is so I guess it's amazing that I got this email out on the right day (it is Friday isn't it?)!

Eric got all the boards on the pavillion roof this week - he's been such a trooper.  He has such a fear of heights and the roof is really steep!  You could literally see him shaking as he worked.  He was determined to get that phase done.  Not sure when the metal will go on . . . probably fall.  But, it is totally usable so we will be enjoying picnics there for sure.  Every block, brick and roof board was recycled from somewhere else . . . . sweet.

We've had trouble with predators getting our chickens (again).  This is a constant struggle.  Hopefully, Eric has figured out a solution, but it means building more reinforced pens that can still be movable so the chickens can always have fresh grass to munch on.  We'll be processing the next round on the 14th - we suggest preordering to be sure to get some.  We'll be starting to process every two weeks and will hopefully have a good constant supply, either just processed or frozen.  I'm planning to offer pulled chicken bbq on a regular basis - a quick, healthy and scrumptious dinner delight (just heat and plop on a roll).  Our Eden View bbq sauce is a tangy-sweet-just-slightly-smoky combination of pure ingredients.  For the record - I'm VERY picky about bbq sauce because I'm not a big fan of anything smoked (sorry), so I've worked to come up with a big punch of flavor with smoke on the side sauce that goes really well with our chicken.

Cindy will be in SC during the week of June 16, so you might want to order a little extra this week to get you through to the 25th when the kitchen will be back up and running.  Is it really possible to be talking about the end of June already???

We had absolutely perfect weather for last Tuesday's market.  Lots came to browse the market, listen to the entertainment and buy good local foods.  It's happening every Tuesday at the military museum parking lot, 2-6 p.m.

Altoona deliveries this week - 2:00 - 2:30 in the parking lot beside Uncle Joe's.  I will have to leave promptly at 2:30 to get Dema to an eye appointment (they had no other time that was good for both of us for weeks).  Also, orders can also be picked up at our farm any week.

Hopefully, you got our message the other day that we've made some changes to our website and email addresses.  We had a new logo designed to better represent who we are and make it more understandable what we do.  I realized a while back that our name/website is not descriptive at all and that it needed to change. If you haven't made the change in your records, please do.  If you normally just respond to this email, you're in good shape as well!  New website is edenviewfoods.com and new email is info@edenviewfoods.com.

Today is the day our truck gets the logo applied - we're anxious to see the end product - a brand spanking new logo on an old truck with a new coat of paint but lots of bruises - it certainly fits us that's for sure (we're kindof old with lots of bruises)!

Today also starts a connection with a new cafe in Bloomsburg - we will be supplying them with baked goods.  I don't even know the name of the cafe . . . bad.  We've been talking for weeks about the opening of the cafe, there just have been some delays and then all of a sudden opening day just happened.  We are grateful and excited to provide healthy artisan goodies for their menu.  I'll let you know the name when I find out what it is!

The asparagus is thriving, so you'll find it again in this week's frittata and also in the veggie and pasta entree.  I've been freezing it as I get is so that I can extend the life of asparagus entrees!

Looks like Tuesday's weather will be a little on the hot side, but come on out to the market - a great environment for an afternoon adventure.  Lots of fresh, local foods and great entertainment.  Military museum parking lot, 2-6 p.m.

Next Altoona delivery -June 12 - 2:00 - 2:30 in the parking lot beside Uncle Joe's.  Orders can also be picked up at our farm any week.  I will have to leave promptly at 2:30 to get Dema to an eye appointment (they had no other time that was good for both of us for weeks).

Good Evening Everyone!

This is just a quick mid-week update.  We have finalized the changes to our web site, so if you link to edenvieworganics.com, you will be redirected to our new site, which is edenviewfoods.com.  The automatic redirect will be in effect through October...just in case!  With the web changes, our email has also changed.  You can now email us at info@edenviewfoods.com.  Please be sure to make the changes to your email address book as well as your web site favorites tab!   An unforseen problem with the changes we have made is that we have completely lost all access to any email that is sent to our edenvieworganics account, so please make the changes while you are thinking about it.

Some of you know that we have added a Facebook page where we will be adding pictures, upcoming events, and weekly updates.  You can "friend" us at EdenView PlowtoPlatter!

Enjoy the HEAT!!!

Wow, what happened to the glimpse of summer we had the last few days???  A step back to cool and cloudy the next couple days.  Eric has been planting away - zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, beets, peppers, herbs and more.  We got in another round of scrubbing and polishing the inside of the box truck - looks so much better, but honestly you'd have to see it before to really know how much better it looks . . it's still pretty rough, but hey, it's proving to be a great market truck and it will also be great in the fall when we do some food vendoring. Our logo is ready and will be put on next week . . that will help jazz it up a bit.

We are really enjoying the tastes of spring . . . especially asparagus (we ate enough for 10 people the other night!) - Dusty and Caleb (grandsons) were brave enough to try it and they couldn't stop eating.  You'll find it in the frittata and bulgar stir fry this week.

From cool and windy to smackin' hot last week at the Boalsburg market, just weird.  Not sure what the weather is to be this week, hopefully somewhere in between.  Tuesdays in the military museum parking lot from 2-6.

Next Altoona delivery -June 12 - 2:00 - 2:30 in the parking lot beside Uncle Joe's.  Orders can also be picked up at our farm any week.

Wish we could bottle days like yesterday and today - the only problem is it makes me want to take a bide ride, go for a hike or just chill on the deck . . . there's too much work to do!

If you are a Boalsburg market customer, you will notice that we have a new market vehicle - a nifty little box truck that is really, really old but with a new coat of paint it doesn't look too bad . . . and when we get our logo on it, it will be even better!  Lots and lots of sanding, scrubbing, and polishing has been going on, and we're not done yet.  After one market, we are convinced that it was a wise purchase (it certainly helped that we got it for a nickel and a dime!).  The big trailer that we've been using for the last several years was a wonderful help, however, it has been really hard on our truck because we are carrying lots of stuff.

Speaking of the Boalsburg market, it was a bit windy for the start of our outdoor season, but a great day nonetheless.  This week's weather looks like it should be a beautiful sunny one - come check it out - military museum parking lot from 2-6 on Tuesdays.

Next Altoona delivery -June12 - 2:00 - 2:30 in the parking lot beside Uncle Joe's.  Orders can also be picked up at our farm any week.

Another beautiful sunny Friday morning!  Lots is going on around here that it's easy to lose track of what day it is!  I've been busy preparing food for days for the annual native plant sale at Shaver's Creek tomorrow (Sat).  The weather looks like it will be a fantastic day to spend at that little piece of beautiful real estate!  A couple of the grandkids will be helping serve drinks and Dema will be busy visiting the eagles and other birds that are there.  This is a great Saturday event if you are interested in native PA plants and just walking around the center is refreshing in itself.

A few guys are coming today to help erect the roof beams on the pavillion - Eric has been working tirelessly to get the grill pit ready for our first cookout on Dema's birthday in two weeks.  We won't have the roof on for the party, but that's ok - it looks pretty awesome just the way it is!

If you're free on Tuesday afternoon, come out to the Boalsburg market - lots of spring green stuff is now available, live entertainment and a great local food hangout - Boalsburg firehall, 2-6 p.m.  This is the last week for the indoor market - we move  outdoors to the military museum on May 14, same time.

Next Altoona delivery will be May 15, but remember, if you wish to order on a week that we don't deliver, we can always make alternative arrangements.

Good sunny Friday morning to ya!  I love these bird chirping, rooster crowing, donkeys braying sunny mornings - a great way to start any day.  The tomatoes went in the greenhouse this week for an early harvest and this week the lettuce, spring garlic (like spring onions) and mint have made their appearance and are ready to harvest.  Along with the standard kitchen fare, we'll have chicken tortilla pie with a portabella sauce and pickled beets - before you turn your nose up on these, you might want to reconsider . . . first, they are really yummy in the sweet/sour brine made with raw apple cider vinegar (which means that they are power packed with enzymes and lacto-fermented benefits) - they make a great side to any meal.  The beets are right from our root cellar and are a powerhouse of nutrition.  If that doesn't entice you to try some, get this - Eric didn't want anything to do with beets until several years ago he was brave enough to try the beets he had grown - he changed his mind about beets and now looks forward to eating them!

If you're free on Tuesday afternoon, come out to the Boalsburg market - lots of spring green stuff is now available, live entertainment and a great local food hangout - Boalsburg firehall, 2-6 p.m.

Our next delivery in Altoona will be May 15, but remember, if you wish to order on a week that we don't deliver, we can always make alternative arrangements.

Finally . . . spring has arrived!  It's so good to see the early spring colors of daffodils, flowering cherry trees, and tulips!  The roosters are crowing up a storm this morning, guess they love spring too.  This warmer weather is bringing more and more out to the Boalsburg market - it's also the bags and bags of greens that several of the vendors have that is drawing those looking for the first eatable greens of the season.  Since our whole crop of early lettuce froze, it will be a little longer until ours is ready, but it won't be long.

The kitchen is super busy today - I'm doing double duty with market prep plus preparing meals for a weekend women's gathering.  The tomato ricotta tortilla pie will be the feature this week at market, as well as iced chicory lattes, a yummy coffee-like drink (which is also very good for you).  Check out all of our other products that are available this week.  Remember, if you live in Altoona and which to order on a week that we don't deliver, we can always make alternative arrangements.

Can it really be Friday already?  Lots of activity going on around here - potatoes, kale, collards, onions and lettuce in the ground, tomatoes in the high tunnel and there's lots of beets and potatoes in the root cellar.  Eric has started work on our pavillion, a tribute to my son, and it's looking mighty fine!  A work party is coming in a couple weeks to erect the ceiling beams (they are beasts).  I mention this because one day we hope to offer 'plow to platter' gourmet rustic meals right here on the farm!  Equipped with a wood fired oven, grills, smoker and and antique wood fired stove, we're totally excited to see good things we can cook up - we've already started thinking about speciality burgers (the grandkids are involved and are coming up with some interesting suggestions).  While we'd like to see it be done yesterday, we aren't sure when it will be completed . . . we are working in steps as we get the funds.

Last week I featured a tomato ricotta tortilla pie - didn't last more than 45 minutes at market, so this week's flavor will be beef and black bean.  There will also be a vegetarian version without the beef.  We'll also have pulled bbq chicken - made with our chickens and homemade sweet tangy sauce.  Lots of other selections to make dinner a breeze - just heat and eat.

The sun is shining, the temperature is rising, the rooster is crowing, and it's Friday - what a way to start the day!!

Eric finally got all 4000 onions in the ground - what a challenge it was - every time he had the time to plant the ground was frozen.  The early seedlings are getting bigger and bigger which means they'll be about ready to get in the ground.  And finally . . . we have chickens!  Yes, I've been rationing them all winter to have enough for meat pies and chicken salad, but they didn't quite stretch far enough because there hasn't been any chicken salad for several weeks.  Not to worry . . . it's back on this week's menu.  Also, a new entree - tomato asparagus ricotta pie.  I knew I still had frozen tomatoes from the summer, but didn't realize just how many there were so they'll be the main ingredient in this yummy treat.  Check out the other soups, sides and main course items on this week's list of healthy and wholesome foods.

We had a request from Amber in Tyrone asking if we would post her facebook address in the hopes that someone would see the picture of her lost dog, Bertha.  Bertha was stolen several weeks ago in Tyrone - please check out her facebook page about this - www.Facebook.com/FindingBertha.  Let's hope that Bertha returns to her home.
